Nigeria Fine For Endangering Lives In Kaduna Stadium
The Confederation of African Football has fined Nigeria the sum of
$5000 (995,376 Naira) for overcrowding and poor security at the Ahmadu
Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The Super Eagles played in the stadium on March
25 against Egypt in an AFCON 2017 qualifier which they lost when
Mohammed Salah cancelled out Oghenekaro Etebo’s second half opener.
More than 40,000 fans filled the 16,000-capacity stadium, with
spectators almost reaching the playing area after the Kaduna state
government threw gates open in order to ensure there was adequate
support for the Super Eagles.
Many observer say Nigeria was lucky to escape without any major
crowd incident that would have endangered thousands of lives in the
football mad city. The Egyptian federation was equally fined $5000 when
fans were adjudged to have used lasers against Nigerian players
excessively in the the return leg.
